We’ll be unveiling the entries over the next little while as we receive them. Here’s mELISSA’S ENTRY, OF AN ENGAGEMENT BORN OUT OF FRIENDS WITH COMMON INTERESTS THAT BLOSSOMED INTO A LOVE ALL ITS OWN.

Ross and I met 18 months ago.  We were both working on a political campaign, and he delivered a load of yard signs to our area.  That was when I got my first glimpse of him, standing under the lighted sign in the parking lot of a local store.  In the not-so-bright light, my only impression was that he had “kind eyes” – a true first impression, as I was to find out.  As the campaign progressed we had regular contact, and after election day we continued to chat about the events of the day.  Those chats became more frequent and often took rabbit trails into other subjects than just political geekery.  We found we had many things in common – enjoyed philosophical rambles, the sort that usually bores our family and friends to death, had an interest in all things English, loved watching movies, and were both terrible bookworms.  Our friendship took off, and very soon we were best friends.  He shared his favorite movies, books and music with me, and I shared mine with him – he loves action movies, folk rock and movie soundtracks, and I love romantic period dramas and classical music.  Before too long we were desperately trying to keep our friendship from moving into a romantic relationship.  We loved each other deeply, but were not sure that was what was meant to be.  Finally this February, a year after we met, we gave in – it was impossible not to.  Following that realization, we began a serious relationship, learning more about each other.  That led to falling more and more in love…

One evening two weeks ago he came to pick me up and take to to eat “at the folks’”, which I supposed meant eating dinner with them.  When I got in his truck, he had the soundtrack from one of my favorite movies, BBC’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Emma”, playing.  I thought that was really sweet, and just like him to get something he knew I liked.  But I still didn’t realize that “this is IT”…  When we got to his family’s farm, he drove on up to his house, and said we’d sit on the porch swing until his sisters got there for dinner.  He turned the music up and we sat there for a little bit enjoying the view and the music and the cooler weather.  But I still didn’t realize that “this is IT”…  He then went in to “get some iced tea”, and came back out with a picnic basket and a blanket.  He told me it was a surprise, and was supposed to be to celebrate that it had been 18 months since we met.  And I still didn’t realize that “this is IT”…

So we sat on the hill overlooking the farm, ate the picnic dinner of chicken salad, crackers, cheeses and grapes, drank sweet tea from mason jars, and listened to the music from the truck.  It was lovely, and I even mentioned how fun it was to have a “soundtrack for real life”, but still I didn’t realize that “this is IT”.  Until dinner was over.  He reached over and hugged me, and I looked down, and in his other hand was a beautiful sparkling solitaire diamond ring.  I was so overwhelmed – this was “IT”!  The whole evening had been just perfect, so very sweet, everything exactly to my tastes, and somehow I’d missed it!  I hugged him, and just laughed…and laughed and laughed…  It was either that or cry for joy…  After a while he pulled me away a little and asked, “Well, will you?”  “YES!”  So now after our perfect engagement story, we are working on our wedding plans for next February, hoping that they will turn out as perfect as his proposal – and happily planning our life together, our happily ever after.
