We’ve all heard the old saying, “there is never a second chance to make a first impression.” The same thing certainly holds true for your event venue! When guests arrive, the entryway and reception areas provide them with their first impression of your theme, set the tone for level of formality, and displays the overall care that you have taken with your event. The goal, of course, is to make your guests feel welcomed and special, and to set a beautiful tone for the rest of the festivities. Taking time to add some lovely decorative touches to the entryway area, or to the entrance to the ceremony area, will help create a memorable impact. And while you can opt for other decorative touches, there is no better way to dress a space than by using beautiful fresh flowers.

Choose an assortment of vivid colours and greet your guests with a feeling of energy and beauty. (You can also set your wedding cake out so that everyone can see it as they arrive as opposed to tucking it away for later.) Use petals or the heads of flowers in decorative trays for an easy way to add impact to what would otherwise be a forgotten and boring table in a lobby or entry. Try hot pink carnations, yellow ranunculus, or purple roses for a wonderful mix of blooms. The best part about choosing vivid colors? A little goes a long way!

Create a grand effect for your entry hall by draping fabric in the archway outside your ceremony space. This venue went all out but even one set of artfully arranged drapes or some simple fabric, topped by beautiful fresh flowers, will have your guests really talking! Use carnations and daisies to keep costs very low!

As guests walk across the lobby of your venue, an easy and wonderful touch is to hang beautiful floral pomanders (commonly known as “kissing balls”) from the chandelier. Floral pomanders could also be suspended from shepherd’s hoots to line a pathway for guests as they arrive to an outdoor event, or from a gazebo or porch in an outdoor ceremony. (Read how to make your own floral pomanders and see how easy it is!)

If your guests are picking up their place cards as they enter your event space, be sure to dress the table with lovely bouquets of fresh flowers. This will add a classy touch to what could otherwise be a fairly dull line up of cards. Try white hyrdrangeas or white snapdragons for easy elegance.

If you are having an outdoor wedding or event, greet guests with a beautiful floral archway. This will definitely set the scene and signal that the outdoor space has been transformed into something “extra special” instead of “everyday average.” Use an existing archway, pergola or create your own for the day. Roses and rose petals are always wonderful choices!

Age is no detriment to love and romance, and we definitely saw this with the very chic and simple wedding of former supermodel Jerry Hall to Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

Jerry Hall, 59, was well known for her glamorous modelling career and her relationship with Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger, with whom she shares four children. Rupert Murdoch, 85, was born in Australia to a family that owned several newspapers. He is best known for his global media empire and his creation of FOX Broadcasting in 1986, to name only one of his larger American conquests. He has six children and has been married three times previously.

The somewhat unexpected couple met last summer in Australia and apparently “clicked” immediately. They began to share increasing amounts of time and were spotted together at several key events during the fall. They spent New Year’s Eve together on a yacht in the Caribbean together with some of their children.

Their wedding took place on Friday March 4, in a small ceremony attended by only a handful of close friends and family. The second event took place Saturday with a private civil ceremony at the beautiful St. Bride’s Church in London. Guests included Sir Bob Gelfof and Sir Michael Caine as well as various members of Mick Jagger’s extended family. The couple’s various daughters served as bridesmaids and flower girls and wore different shades of blue. Wedding flowers were white, with the groomsmen sporting white rose boutonnieres. Rupert’s two youngest daughters, Grace and Chloe, carried charming wicker baskets that included ivy, white roses, white spray roses, and delicate white stephanotis.

Popular American Idol alum Colton Dixon married in Nashville this month, to his lovely girlfriend Annie Coggeshall. Chrisitian singer Colton, 24 and Annie, 27, tied the knot in a black tie ceremony on Friday January 8 after three years as a couple. The event took place at the Scarritt Bennett Center before 160 of their friends and family.

Photo from Gospelherald.com

People.com provided several exclusive photos of the wedding, and described it as having both “fantasy” and “fairytale” elements. Apparently the fairytale began with the couple’s romantic September engagement at Disney World (Colton even hid the engagement ring in Cinderella’s glass slipper).

Photo from People.com

The “fantasy” element came into play based on Colton’s love for batman and other comic book heroes. Apparently Colton even has a life-sized batman costume at his home. Colton’s mother Teresa gifted her son and his groomsmen with superhero t-shirts to wear under their wedding attire, adding a wonderful playful and personal touch to the couple’s beautiful day.

Photo from ok.co.uk

Annie wore a stunning strapless organza gown by (who else?) renowned designer Vera Wang, that was truly Cinderella-worthy. Colton’s sister Schyler Dixon shared her own snaps, with the caption ” “Beautiful bride #coltannwedding.” She also performed the gospel favorite How Great Thou Art during the ceremony.

Colton admits that he wept when he first saw Annie come down the aisle. During the ceremony, romantic Colton then serenaded his new bride with Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling in Love.

The couple’s exit at the end of the night included another fairytale element: Colton and Annie departed together in (of course) a horse-drawn carriage totally reminiscent of a classic Cinderella coach. If you loved Annie’s bridal bouquet, you can certainly get the look for less with BunchesDirect. Try Together We Stand or Cheerful Blast with Wild at Heart Centerpieces, to complete your own fairytale florals.

We wish Annie and Colton all the best as they start their married lives!

For all of our excited brides who have weddings approaching, or for those of you who are planning other key events, choosing your flowers will be a big part of your process. As we ring in a new year, let’s take a look at what’s hot in flower trends for 2016! We’ve added a few suggestions from BunchesDirect, but there are many more at the website so be sure to look over all the options or call in and let one of our consultants guide you.

Back to Nature. Less formal “gathered from the garden” looks will become more and more popular for 2016. This trend sees some brides and event planners using less structured bouquets and arrangements and opting instead for a looser, more textural gathering of assorted blooms. If you love a more relaxed garden or country style then this trend is for you!

Exotic and Vibrant. More of this year’s brides will be opting for flowers in vivid, saturated hues rather than only pastels. If you love pops of rich colour, then this trend is perfect for you.  Choose bright mixes of blooms such as vivid yellow sunflowers, bright red roses and orange gerberas, and give your wedding or event a very vibrant and energetic feel. Try Orange Mist Bouquet, Passionate Smile Bouquet, or a stunning Romantic Rush Bouquet.

Get the Blues. Your wedding or event will be very on trend for 2016 if you opt for blue: all shades of blues are gaining in popularity and are going to be a hot item for this year. Your wedding or event will be very on trend if you opt for blue. You can pair blue bridesmaid dresses or table accents with blue flowers, or create contrast with cream and white or purple flowers (another hot color trend this year!).

Best of all, with BunchesDirect, it’s possible to achieve this look without spending a fortune to do it!
